Running a trucking company, you need to know about the big changes that happen in the industry. In 2022, there are some significant changes that you might see that could impact your business.
Of the most significant changes, one of them is that CDL trainees may be subject to the entry-level driving training (ELDT) rule. This rule was put into place starting on February 7, 2022 and makes the requirements for obtaining a CDL stricter. It includes minimum training requirements for those who want to get a commercial driver’s license for the first time, upgrade their CDL, or get a school bus, hazardous material or passenger endorsement.
Younger drivers will be hitting the roads
Another thing to be aware of is a change in the age for interstate truck drivers. The goal behind the changes is to make it easier to get younger drivers into the industry. Drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 will now be able to driver for interstate routes through the proposed under-21 commercial driver pilot program proposed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Right now, drivers of those ages can only travel within their state.
Since Nov 15. 2021, the $1 trillion infrastructure bill has made it essential for apprenticeship programs to be available to younger drivers, which could help certify another 25,000 drivers under the age of 21 before the year 2024. The goal of this is to boost the industry and cut down on supply chain delays.
There are other suggestions being made that could change the industry in the future but that have not yet been implemented. For example, the use of speed limiters has been discussed, but it isn’t yet the reality.
